We’re here in Banos, which is known as the adventure town in Ecuador. There is rafting, cycling, horseback riding, climbing, bungee jumping. And I’m going to go on a “tarabita,” which is gonna take across to the waterfall. This is Jose who’s been operating the “tarabita” for over 20 years. And I have a feeling the engine’s a little bit older than that. But the good news is it’s only $1. After doing the bungee swing and some horseback riding, we headed to the town of Macot to see the jungle. So we’re making our own trail in the jungle with our fearless leader in front of us. I’m trying to stay as far behind our leader as I can so I don’t get hit by the machete.

He’s pretty aggressive with it, just whacking all the plants in our way. And we’re about to explore all the medicinal plants of this area. The main characteristic of this tree is that in the inside there’s this thing which is called “sangre de drago” in Spanish, in , drago blood. It looks exactly like blood.

Thing for cuts, wounds. On occasion, you might see a wild boar or a puma. But thankfully I didn’t because I fell into a wild boar cave. I need help! Please help me. I made it. In places where there’s no water, you pick those things and just eat the skin. And you hydrate yourself very well. It has a bitter taste, and you eat them, and you can recover like that. Our leader’s taking a little bit of a break. So I’m paving the way for all of us. There’s also the “una de gato,” meaning cat’s nails, which is named for the curved thorn. It’s used for arthritis, for cancer, diabetes, and asthma.

When we got out of the jungle, my guide decided to show me a not so medicinal use for a plant. This plant is called “ortiga.” And it’s something, you know, that if you do touch it, it just burns and itches and it’s pretty bad. Now, the Indians here in Ecuador have their own justice. If they caught somebody from the community stealing or something like that, they just get the people undressed, bathe them in very cold water, and hit them with this. Now, Asha Mevlana is gonna try “ortiga.”

She’s gonna yell. Ow, it really hurts. This is the result of getting hit by the “ortiga.” There’s bumps all over my hand, and it really stings. And even though we didn’t get to see any animals in the jungle, we got to see a whole bunch outside the jungle. Ecuador also has some conveniences for North Americans. They use the US dollar, the same voltage, most people speak , and they use Eastern Standard Time, so there’s no jet lag. Just show up, and you’re ready to go.
