The boat was launched 35 times and rescued 77 people. On 15 January 1922, the Lizzie Porter went to the rescue of the Hartlepool steam trawler James B. Graham in horrendous seas and freezing weather off False Emmanuel Head at the north end of the island. The lifeboat crew managed to weave between the shoals and shallow reefs in extremely difficult conditions and successfully rescued the nine crewmen on board the steam trawler. For splendid seamanship and great courage’, Coxswain George Cromarty was awarded the Royal National Lifeboat Institute’s Silver Medal. The three second coxswains were awarded Bronze Medals, while the rest of the crew received extra monetary rewards for their bravery. Unfortunately the RNLI withdrew the last of its lifeboats from Lindisfarne in 1968, and all that remains there now are the rescue memorial plaques on the wall opposite the priory entrance and the old lifeboat house at Jenny Bell’s Well. Vessels wrecked around the island A considerable number of ships have been wrecked on the island’s coast over the past few centuries, hence the need for two lifeboats on such a small place. The shallow sea around Holy Island is riddled with treacherous, jagged reefs, reaching far out to sea on the east coast. During north and nor’easterly storms, huge surfing rollers are created by the shallow seabed and they come crashing in from miles out to sea.
