There is sufficient room to navigate into it slowly but not enough to turn around, which means having to reverse all the way out and, because of the protruding underwater rock shelf, that can be a dodgy operation. Lots of tiny colourful nudibranches can be found on the walls close to and around the entrance of the canyon, but probably only the eagle-eyed, close-up underwater photographer will notice them. It is a pity that many divers do not look closely enough to spot these beautiful little gems but you do not have to be eagle-eyed to spot the silver streaks of cormorants and other seabirds as they flash past under the boat moored near the entrance. Depths at the north corner of Megstone are only around 10 metres but with very strong currents and the rock sides of the island are rather smooth. Topside, the rocks are ripe’ with the droppings from hundreds of birds. A shallow weedy 3-metre reef runs out from the island with lots of tangleweed fronds waving from it. It is reasonably sheltered at low water on an ebb tide, but the current increases the further you go west from Megstone. A few little crevices but hardly worth the effort of getting your gear wet. A high, steep, sloping reef wall leads away south from Megstone for about 150 metres before turning west and levelling out onto the seabed. It is the edge of a very shallow flat rock plateau on the west side, covered in a dense jungle of kelp.
