Dive Sites between the Farne islands, Seahouses and holy island There are a number of nice reefs just to the north of Seahouses. However, with one or two exceptions, there are very few decent dive sites in the stretch of water between Bamburgh and Holy Island because most of the seabed is just sand with a few rocks thrown in. Located about half a mile north of Seahouses Harbour and a couple of hundred metres off the shore, the Shorestone Outcar is an area ofvery shallow sand and kelp-covered rocks that dry on a low spring tide. The Outcars are more or less in a line with the harbour entrance at Seahouses and they are a particular hazard to ships hugging the shoreline and approaching the harbour from the north. There have been a least six recorded vessels wrecked on the Shorestone Outcars since 1821, two of them where lives were lost. On 26 February 1853 the Hull schooner Nisus was wrecked and three of her crew drowned. The Sunderland schooner Emerald was lost with all hands on 18 October 1865. As late as 1947, the Queensferry tug Alexander ran aground, but was later refloated with a minimal amount of damage. Except for some small edible crabs and a few pieces of twisted wreckage, most of which is well buried in the sand, there is very little of interest on the Outcar itself. At high tide there is only about 4-5 metres at the most over the top of Outcar and the tide is fairly brisk.
