SW ofthe Cathedral, at 6 Clemenstorv, is a small Viking Museum. Farther SW, on the S side ofthe busy RSdhus Plads, the hub of the city’s traffic, stands the Rsidhuset (Town Hall) (by A. Jacobsen and E. Moller, 1938-42), with a notably fine interior (conducted tours); from the tower, 60 m (200 ft) high, there is a fine view. On the W side of the square is the attractive Pig Fountain (Grisebronden), by M. Boggild, and to the S of the Town Hall another fountain, Agnes and the Triton. SE of the Town Hall, near the Central Station, we find the Arhus-Hai (bowling; restaurant).
NW ofthe Cathedral in Vestergade is Vor Frue Kirke (Church of Our Lady, 1 3th1 5th c.), Cheapest way to travel Scandinavia with a monastery used since the Reformation as an old people’s hospital. The old chapterhouse in the W wing has late medieval wall paintings. There is also a remnant of the Gothic cloister. A little way W of the church, in the southern half of the Botanic Garden, an interesting open-air museum, Den gamle By (the Old Town”), consists of a collection of some sixty old houses, shops and workshops with their furnishings, from different parts of Denmark (admission free: charge for admission to the very interesting burgomaster’s house of 1 597, the historical collection and the textile collection).
In a park to the N of the town are the buildings, erected from 1933 on, of the Den gamle By, Arhus University (founded 1928), Cheapest way to travel Scandinavia including the main block (1946) and Moller’s Book Tower. In the College of Journalism is a Museum of the Press. In the southern part of the park we find the Natural History Museum and farther S, in Vennelystpark, the Museum of Art (1966), with paintings, graphic art and some sculpture, mainly by Danish artists.
To the S of the town are the Tivoli-Friheden amusement park, the Marselis-borg Hall and the Stadium. Still farther S, in a park beyond Carl Nielsens Vej, is the little palace of Marselisborg (1 902), the summer residence of the Queen. To the NE of this, on the far side of Kongevej, a memorial park commemorates Danes who fell in the First World War. To the SE, in (Jrneredevej, is the Varna Restaurant, with a view of Arhus Bay. From here Strandvej, runningalongsidethesea, leads N backto the middle of the town. In Dalgas Avenue, which branches off on the left, is the Danish Fire Service Museum, with some sixty vehicles.
The Harbour, to the E of the town, is protected by breakwaters and has five basins (9-5 km (6 miles) of quays) and a fishing harbour.
SURROUNDINGS. 9 km (6 miles) S of the town (leaving on Strandvej) is the MoesgSrd Prehistoric Museum, housed in an old manor-house. A particularly notable feature of the museum is the Grauballe Man, a body dating back some 1600 years, found perfectly preserved in a bog. In the grounds ofthe museum is a Prehistoric Trail, which leads past Stone Age and Bronze Age remains and reconstructions of houses of the early historical period.
From Arhus A1 5 serves the southern part of the DJursland peninsula, Cheapest way to travel Scandinavia leaving the N side of the town and following the wide arc of Kale Bay.
