They no longer show double-features of classic films, but the Coolidge remains one of the city’s fine art houses, often showing exclusive runs of foreign films, documentaries, and concert films. Ticket prices have gone up to first-run rates, but you can always go to the first showing of the day for either of their two screens for just $5. There is also a membership program: A $50 annual membership gets you into any showing for just $4.50. If you go to the movies a lot, you’ll save money. Otherwise, stick with early shows.
Free Friday Flicks at the Hatch Shell

Every summer, from June to August, the City of Boston sponsors a free movie on Friday nights on a big screen in the Hatch Shell. Showtime is 7 P.M. and seating is first-come, first-served. Bring a blanket and some snacks. Past offerings have ranged from The Wizard of Oz and Casablanca to The Lion King and even The Flintstones. Yabba-dabba-doo!
