What is Cusco?

Cusco is the ancient capital of the Inca Empire. The city is located in the Andes in western Peru. The city was first settled by the Pre-Columbian indigenous people about 14,000 years ago. It was conquered by the Spanish conquistadors in 1532 and became part of the Viceroyalty of Peru. In 1768, it became part of the new Viceroyalty of New Granada.

The city was destroyed by an earthquake on August 12, 1746. It was rebuilt by the Spanish and then abandoned again in 1770 because of another earthquake. The city was reoccupied in 1784 and became the capital of the newly created Peruvian Republic. It served as the capital until 1821 when Lima was declared the new capital. Today, Cusco is a popular tourist destination with a population of about 1 million people.

Where to Stay in Cusco

There are many hotels in Cusco, but the most popular choices are those in the center of the city. If you’re looking to be close to all the attractions, opt for one of these high-end options. However, if budget is a concern, there are plenty of midrange and budget lodgings available as well.

When Tours Arrive in Cusco

Most visitors to Cusco arrive via bus or train from Lima or Arequipa. The two main companies are Cruz del Sur and Ostras Bus. When you arrive in Cusco, the first thing to do is find your way to the tourist information center (COTIC). There, they will give you a map of the city and help you get oriented.

Now that you have your bearings, it’s time to start exploring! The first thing you’ll want to do is find your way to Sacsayhuaman, one of the most iconic sites in Cusco. From there, make your way down Calle de la Compañia until you reach Plaza de Armas (the main square in downtown Cusco). Take a break at one of the restaurants on or near Plaza de Armas, and then make your way down to Plaza de Armas itself.

Take a seat at one of the restaurants in the square, and let yourself be amazed by all of the Inca ruins that surround you. While you’re there, you might as well head up Calle de la Compañia to Plaza de Armas Colon (the name changes depending on what side of the street you’re on). It’s a very historic part of town! From there, get back on Calle de la Compañia and go downhill until you reach Huayna Picchu.
