History of Fayetteville

Fayetteville is the county seat of Cumberland County, in the U.S. state of North Carolina. The city had a population of 104,228 at the 2010 census, making it the largest city in Cumberland County and the twelfth largest city in North Carolina. It is also the fifth most populous city in North Carolina, after Charlotte, Raleigh, Durham and Winston-Salem.

Fayetteville was founded on May 15, 1799 by Major James Moore and Colonel Thomas Polk. The town was named for General Lafayette, a French military hero who fought with America during the American Revolutionary War. In 1816, Fayetteville became the temporary capital of North Carolina after Raleigh was burned by the British Army.

Fayetteville remained the state capital until 1868.
Fayetteville is home to several universities including Cumberland University (founded as Campbell College), UNC-Chapel Hill, and Meredith College. The University of North Carolina at Pembroke and Appalachian State University are also located in Fayetteville.
