THE BLAKE HOTEL OO555 S. McDowell St. 704/372-4100, www. theblakehotel. net

The Blake Hotel underwent a total renovation in 2005. The former Adam’s Mark Hotel had 613 rooms that were converted into 308 spacious rooms and suites ($159-179 d) complete with leather and wood furniture, Belgian linens, and flat-screen TVs. The renovation cost $6 million and helped put the Blake back on the must-experience list of Uptown accommodations. Like other Uptown hotels, the Blake caters to business travelers, but the ultra-modern decor (complete with animal-print pillows on the beds) has drawn leisure travelers to the hotel. The outdoor pool, with its colorful umbrellas and private cabanas, adds to the vacation appeal.

MOREHEAD INN OO1122 E. Morehead St. 704/376-3357, www.moreheadinn. com

This charming bed-and-breakfast is in the heart of Dilworth, just blocks from Latta Park and some of the finest homes in the area. Local entrepreneur Charles Campbell Coddington commissioned architect William Peeps to design the Colonial Revival-style home. Built in 1917, the grand white clapboard home with its signature green shingles is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and looks much as it did when Coddington first moved into the home almost a century ago. The home, which was known as the Coddington House before it became the Morehead Inn, was a private residence until 1980. The original plan had four bedrooms, three bathrooms, and two sleeping porches on the second floor. A renovation added two balcony suites, an upstairs parlor, a sunroom, an additional bedroom, and four new bathrooms. On the main floor, the library and dining room have been preserved and retain all of their historic features, including a faux fireplace in the dining room that Peeps added to retain the symmetry of the exterior design. The Morehead Inn opened as a bed-and-breakfast in 1984 and has 13 rooms ($179-269 d) furnished with period pieces and antiques that help it retain the feel of a private home. All of the rooms are named after streets in the neighborhood. Request the Hawthorne Room, which has a private garden right outside the door. Breakfast is included in room rates and features homemade pastries, fresh fruit, and made-to-order Belgian waffles.

Behold us, then, upon this celebrated river, whose Katowice Map singularities I have attentively studied. The Mississippi takes its rise in several lakes in the North. Katowice Map Its channel is very narrow at the mouth of the Mesconsin, and runs south until it is affected by very high hills. Its current is slow, because of its depth. In sounding we found nineteen fathoms of water. A little further on it widens nearly three-quarters of a league, and the width continues to be more equal.
