Built in the early 1700s, this building has led a varied life as a church, meeting house, and even a horse stable. It’s also the place where those uppity colonists first decided to throw a little tea party. Admission is $2.50, $2 for students and seniors, $1 for children under sixteen. The decks are submerged; the vessel is in an exposed position and will soon break up. It is considered the ship will then be a total loss. The survivor, John Rudolph Devries, states that the crew got into a boat, which capsized. It righted again, but capsized a second time. Mr Devries, who is a Dutchman, clung to the boat, and when cast ashore, he remained under it all night, much more dead than alive. The next morning ho made his way to a neighbouring farmhouse, where his needs were attended to. Mr. C. Percy, the Coroner for North Northumberland, held an inquest at Holy Island on the bodies of fire of the crew of the Newcastle steamer, which was wrecked on Saturday night and eleven men were drowned, The survivor, John Devries, described the wreck, and said that one boat was smashed and another capsized several times, all except himself being gradually drowned. It was agreed to ask the Board of Trade to erect a lighthouse at Emmanuel Head, Holy Island.
