The top is covered in heavy tangleweed, kelp and soft corals. The sides of the mound are steep walls down to 12 metres on the west and north side with a rounded edge at the top and all are carpeted in soft corals. There are very few crevices or gullies in it except where the rock slopes down at the south end. There is a very old Admiralty pattern anchor lying up against the base of the west wall, but no sign of anything else. The tidal flow is very strong in both directions. It is most definitely best dived at low slack water, although there is a little shelter at the southwest side on the neap flood tide. The surrounding seabed is all stone, broken shell and sand and shelves away gradually to 18 metres. A few empty scallop shells are often found washed up at the base of the reef on the western side, which suggests there may be scallops between Swedman Rocks and the mainland. A kelp-covered reef, with its highest point drying to 0.2 metres on the lowest astronomical tide and the steep reef sides go down to a sandy bottom at 10 metres.
