684 Purchase St. New Bedford;(508) 994-2900 Opened as a vaudeville theater in the 1920s, the Zeiterion Theatre was soon taken over by that new art form movies. In 1956, in fact, this was the site of the world premiere of Moby Dick Melville’s classic is set in New Bedford, after all with star Gregory Peck in attendance. In the early 80s, the Zeiterion reclaimed its heritage as a venue for affordable, live performances of music, drama, and dance.
The diversity of offerings is impressive. Theater events include Broadway musicals, comedy, and opera; music programs include symphony concerts, folk, and gospel; and dancers from ballet to modem have traipsed across this stage. For all this, tickets can be as low as $8! What’s more, Zeiterion has a unique subscription deal: Order tix for as few as two shows, and you get a discount on each ticket. The more you order, the bigger the discount. You see only the shows you want, and you don’t have to wait in line.
Discounts are also offered for people on income assistance (food stamps, day care vouchers, and so on), senior citizens, and students. Group rates and subscription tix are available to all. And, Mine hasn’t even mentioned the educational programs and community outreach activities. The Z’s season runs from October through May. A summer series for young folks runs through July and August, with tickets $5 to $7.50.
