ROUND VALLEY RECREATION AREA
Located in north-central New Jersey, this state recreation area centers around Round Valley Reservoir, which is one mile by three miles in size. Surrounding the reservoir are hilly oak-hickory woodlands. Wildlife includes deer and fox.
Activities: Hiking and backpacking are possible on the 9-mile Cushetunk Trail, which is rough and steep in places. There’s also an easy 1-mile trail. Horses and mountain bikes are allowed on the longer trail.
Cross-country skiing is available here in winter when there’s adequate snow. Canoeing and other boating are possible on the reservoir, as is fishing. Limited waterfowl hunting is permitted in season.
Camping Regulations: A large number of backpack campsites are located along the Cushetunk Trail. The sites begin about three miles from a parking lot, and continue alongside the trail for a stretch of about three miles. The campsites are also accessible by boat.
Campers must register in person at the park office and obtain a permit. A fee is charged for camping each night. Sites may be reserved in advance by mail or in person. Campfires are allowed in fire rings provided. Pets are prohibited.
