Starling was my barrow. He put his hands on the deck and I held his legs. He set off at a furious pace, his arms pounding along. I was impressed and thought we were going to win, but an engineer pair came alongside and barged Starling into the bulkhead, his hands collapsed and we went down. We finished last. It was a good effort all round and we had a mighty applause from the officers. The meal was colossal: eight courses, two hours. I drunk too much and went out to be sick over the side between the fillet mignon and the turkey. Starling drunk too much and sloped off to his bed halfway through. Rolo was outraged when he discovered this and went to his cabin and dragged him back in again.
