The nadir took place on the second Sunday, in the middle of the afternoon. I was lying on my bunk, reading, when Rolo banged on the door and barged in. Go and see the second mate on the bridge and ask him for a long-stand. I set off, well used to being ordered to do things that held no meaning for me. The second mate looked at me, scratched his chin, went into the chart room for ten minutes then came out and said: See the third engineer I went down into the bowels of the blast-hot engine room and found the third working on one of the pumps. He looked up, listened, then went back to his work. I waited for a quarter of an hour until he finished. He said: The chief steward might have it So off I went again. The chief steward sent me to Sparks, who sent me to the chief mate, who sent me to the bosun, who sent me to the carpenter, who sent me to various ABs, to the cook – and so it went on. Everyone listened, nodded, then when back to what they were doing while I stood there for a while.
