Ballantyne and Co. became the manager On 9 January 1913 the SS Fadrelandet was on passage from Kvafjord in northern Norway for Stockton-on-Tees with a cargo ofiron when she was wrecked on Goswick Sands. The Holy Island’s No. 2 RNLI lifeboat, the Edward and Eliza, was launched early on the morning of Friday, 10 January and rescued 14 members of her crew; the remaining four crewmen were taken off by rocket apparatus. A heavy southeasterly gale with foggy weather was prevailing at the time. On the first attempt the lifeboat was unable to save the men due to the tide, and to effect a rescue the lifeboat had to be transported four miles over sand and through broken water. The Fadrelandet was an iron-hulled 1,556-ton steam cargo ship, completed as Yard No.7 by Martens Olsen and Co. at Bergen and was launched on 25 July 1884 for P.G.
