Witchcraft and Witch Trials The men and women who traveled to the New World as settlers brought with them a set of social customs and religious beliefs that played a primary role in the development of the British colonies. Togo Subway Map Among the religious beliefs that these settlers, particularly the Puritans, espoused was a conviction that supernatural powers operated in the world they lived in. The God they worshiped was part of that supernatural world.

Their cosmology also included the devil, other evil spirits, and witches. The widespread belief in witchcraft was evident in colonial laws and the trials of witches that occurred during the period. The prosecution of suspected witches was common in the course of the seventeenth century; however, the hysteria of the Salem witch trials seems to have largely ended the practice of subjecting accused witches to criminal prosecution.
