The northeastern end of Brownsman, close in to the island in Brownsman Haven, is an area of kelp-covered flat rock which just slopes gradually away downwards. The tidal run is fairly strong and there is not much of interest except for a few sea urchins. However, quite close by in 25 metres and at coordinates 55 38′.0118 N 001 37′.0572 W, the remnants of the wooden brig George and Mary can still be found; she was on passage for London with a cargo of coal but struck the eastern point of Brownsman during a severe easterly gale and was lost with all hands A kelp-covered rock shelf dropping down a cliff face to a shingle seabed at 20 metres plus and a strong tidal stream running south and away from Brownsman on the flood. It is best dived at slack water to get the full benefit of the dive site, as it is a rather exposed corner and subjected to a lot of passing boat traffic. Halfway along the southern side of Staple Island and lying at the cliff base are the smashed-up remains of the French steamer Saint Andre. The wreck is orientated in an east to west direction and lies in depths between 17 metres and 23 metres. It is now totally collapsed, well broken up and rather decayed, with just ribs, steel plates, framework and the boilers and broken engine remaining. There is very little to find in the way of artefacts, but this is still a nice and very popular dive site during the summer months.
