Salzburg ENTERTAINMENT
Max Reinhardt, Richard Strauss, and Hugo von Hofmannsthal founded the renowned Salzburger Festspiele in 1920. Ever since, Salzburg has become a musical mecca from late July to the end of August. On the eve of the festival’s opening, over 100 dancers don regional costumes and perform a Fackeltanz (torchdance) on Residenzpl. Operas, plays, films, concerts, and tourists overrun every available public space. Info and tickets for Festspiele events are available through the Festspiele Kartenbiiro (ticket office) and Tageskasse (daily box office) in Kara- janpl. against the mountain and next to the tunnel. (Open M-F 9:30am-3pm; July 1- July 22 M-Sa 9:30am-5pm; July 23-end of festival daily 9:30am-6:30pm.)
Even when the Festspiele are not on, many other concerts and events occur around the city. The Salzburg Academy of Music and Performing Arts performs a number of concerts on a rotating schedule in the Mozarteum (next to the Mirabell gardens), and the Dom has a concert program in July and August.
