Half an hour into my dive, there was a surge of water and everything went dark as if a cloud had passed over head. At the time I did not think anything of it and carried on to finish my dive. The current had subsided as I had hit slack water right at the end of my dive. I surfaced, knowing I must be close to the place where we had anchored. I looked towards the Flatacraft (my little RHIB) and was amazed to find Trevor standing on the upturned hull, with gear floating around everywhere. He shouted for me to hurry and I quickly swam the few metres over to the boat and clipped my gear onto the side handles. All I could save was Trevor’s demand valve, which had lodged in the coil of ropes beneath the hull. I climbed onto the slippery hull, we secured some ropes to the handles at one side, and after a number of attempts of slipping and sliding on the glossy fibreglass, managed to right the upturned boat. The engine had been submerged upside down for half an hour and the carburettors and fuel tank had lots of sea water in them. We tried desperately to start the 50-hp Mercury outboard but without tools, which had been lost with everything else, it was useless.
