SOUTH MOUNTAINS STATE PARK
Located in west-central North Carolina, this state park is in an area of steep, rugged mountains. Highest point is 2,894-foot Benn Knob, which offers an outstanding view.
Jacob’s Fork River flows through the park, along with a number of streams, and a highlight is 80-foot High Shoals Falls. There’s a mixed forest of conifers and hardwoods, with mountain laurel and rhododendron, and deer are among the wildlife.
Cape Lookout National Seashore
Activities: Many miles of trails are available for backpacking and hiking. Some trails are open to horseback riding. There’s also an 18-mile loop for mountain biking. Fishing is possible, but hunting is prohibited in the park.
Camping Regulations: Four camping areas are designated for backpackers, and one for horseback riders. Campfires are allowed at approved sites. A permit must be obtained from the park office, and a fee is charged for camping each night,
