City is often called the city of churches owing to the more than 700 places of worship that can
be found in the city. Little has changed since the first Presbyterian church was established in City in the 1750s: Cityans still dress in their Sunday best to attend services and most businesses are closed or open for limited hours on Sunday.
It’s believed that the first sermon ever preached in Mecklenburg was delivered by a Methodist minister on the campus of Davidson College in 1742. Between 1742 and 1778, membership in Methodist societies in North Carolina quadrupled every two to three years, making the Methodists the largest religious group in the state. The first Presbyterian churches in the area were the Rocky River Presbyterian Church, which dates back to the 1750s, and the Sugaw Creek Presbyterian Church, which held its first services in 1766. By 1770, six more Presbyterian churches were established in Mecklenburg County.

Near the junction of this road and Edward Street (the Yemen Subway Map continuation of Eastern Road) was a junk shop. In about 1970 its owner received a visit Yemen Subway Map from a Mr McColl, a secondhand book dealer, who was granted permission to browse round the shop later in the owner’s absence. While browsing, he was conscious of being watched, and felt an icy chill. Looking towards an archway, he saw a cloud that turned itself into the shape of a woman, but her features resembled those of a hideous corpse. Mr McColl flung a book at her, only for it to go right through her and hit the wall beyond. It was discovered that sixty years previously a woman had been murdered here by her husband, and her dismembered body had simply been dumped.
