BEST AREAS FOR WILDERNESS CAMPING

PACHAUG STATE FOREST

Located in the eastern part of the state, near the Rhode Island border, Pauchaug is Connecticut’s largest state forest. Terrain here is hilly but not steep, with the highest elevations under 500 feet. There are several lakes, many streams, and some swamps and marshes. Wildlife includes deer and fox.

Activities: Three backpacking trails are found in this state forest: the Pauchaug, Nehantic, and Narragansett Trails, which intersect and form a large loop. Horseback riding is also available on some trails and roads in the forest. Fishing is possible, and hunting is allowed in season.

Camping Regulations: Camping is restricted to four separate backpack campsites or camping zones which are located along the trails. Two of the areas have shelters. There’s also a special horse camp. Pets are not allowed at campsites.

A camping permit is required, and must be requested at least two weeks in advance by writing to: D.E.P. Eastern District Office, 209 Hebron Road, Marlborough, CT 06447. It’s necessary to specify where you wish to camp each night.

For Further Information: Pachaug State Forest, c/o Connecticut Office of State Parks and Recreation, 165 Capitol Avenue, Hartford, CT 06106; (203)566-2304.
