Salzburger Land derives its name from the German Salz (salt), and it was this white gold that first drew visitors to the region. Combined with Upper Austria, this region encompasses the shining lakes and rolling hills of the Salzkammer- gut, where Salzburg and Hallstatt are among the more enticing destinations.

Backdropped by mountains and graced with Baroque wonders, Salzburg (pop. 140,000) offers both spectacular sights and a rich musical culture. Mozart’s birth place and the setting of The Sound of Music, Salzburg now carries on this legacy with aplomb. Trains: Hauptbahnhof, in Sudtirolerpl. (24hr. reservations 05 17 17). To: Graz (4hr. 8 per day, 37); Innsbruck (2hr. 11 per day, 30); Munich (2hr. 30 per day, 26); Vienna (3V&hr. 26 per day, 37); Zurich (6hr. 7 per day, 65).

Public Transportation: Get bus info, at the Lokalbahnhof (44 80 61 66), next to the train station. Single tickets (1.70) available at automatic machines or from the drivers. Books of five tickets (7), daypasses (3.20), and week passes (9) avail able at machines, the ticket office, or Tabak shops (newsstandtobacco shops). Punch your ticket when you board in order to validate it or risk a 36 fine. Buses usu ally make their last run at 10:30-ll:30pm, but BusTaxi fills in when the public buses stop. Get on at Hanuschpl. or Theaterg. and tell the driver where you need to go (every 30min. Su-Th ll:30pm-l:30am, F-Sa ll:30pm-3am; 3 for anywhere within the city limits).
