The northern Dark Peak area contains some of the wildest and most rugged hill country in England. The area around Edale is spectacular, and the National Park Authority’s 8 Walks Around Edale (£1.20) details nearby trails. The town offers little other than a church, cafe, pub, school, and the nearby YHA youth hostel , Rowland Cote. ( (01433) 670 302. Dorms £11.50, under-18 £8.30.)

Although its well-preserved city walls have foiled many, York (pop. 105,000) fails to impede its present-day hordes of visitors. Today, marauders brandish cameras instead of swords, and the plunder is now York’s compact collection of rich historical sights, including Britain’s largest Gothic cathedral.

Buses: There are bus stations at Rougier St. Exhibition Sq. Station Rd. and on Piccadilly St. National Express ((08705) 808 080) arrives from: Edinburgh (5$hrž daily,

£36); London (5hr. 3 per day, £31); and Manchester (234hr. 3 per day, £12).

Local Transportation: Call First York ( 622 992, bus times 551 400) for info. Ticket office open M-F 9am-5pm. Yorkshire Coastliner ( (0113) 244 8976 or (01653) 692 556) runs buses from the train station to Castle Howard (227).
