COPENHAGEN

COPENHAGEN

Copenhagen (pop. 1,800,000) combines the swan ponds, gingerbread houses, and Lille Havfrue (Little Mermaid) of Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tales with the cosmopolitan style, world-class museums, and round-the-clock nightlife of Europe’s largest cities, all the while maintaining a friendly, distinctly Danish charm. Denmark’s capital embodies the youthful, laid-back, and progressive attitude that pervades this country of islands.

ORIENTATION AND PRACTICAL INFORMATION

Copenhagen lies on the east coast of the island of Zealand (Sjaelland), across the 0resund Sound from Malmo, Sweden. The 28km Oresund bridge and tunnel, which opened July 1, 2000, established the first “fixed link” between the two countries. Copenhagen’s main train station, Kobenhavn H, lies near the city’s heart. North of the station, Vesterbrogade passes Tivoli and Radhuspladsen, the central square, then cuts through the city center as Stroget (STROY-yet), the world’s longest pedestrian thoroughfare. As it heads east, Stroget goes through a series of names: Frederiks-berggade, Nygade, Vimmelskaftet, Amagertorv, and Ostergade.
