This is truly a book lover’s paradise, the sort you can lose yourself in for hours. Blink as you cruise Newton’s discount mile and you’ll miss this olive-drab, concrete warehouse; but go inside, and you’ll be astounded by acres and acres of shelves.
The store divides into two halves: Current books, arranged by publisher (some by subject), and a separate area of remainders, with as diverse a selection as any other retail store. Titles currently in print are sold at 20% off the cover price, with New York Times bestsellers at 30% off. The incredibly well-read staff can help you find, or look up, almost any book you could possibly want.
Remainders offer discounts of up to 80%, with hundreds of titles in every subject: history, literature, children’s, travel, cooking, computers. Find David Halberstam’s excellent account of the Red Sox-Yankees rivalry in The Summer of 49, marked down from $21.95 to $4.98. There are also many collector’s edition books, such as the giant, sealed Art of Walt Disney originally $60, here $39.95.
NEMBF has recently expanded its hours. They’re open Mondays through Saturdays from 9 A.M. to 5:30 PM, plus Wednesday and Thursday evenings until 8:30; Sundays, from 12-5.
