Plaza Uruguaya

During the day, Plaza Uruguaya is a calm spot, less frequented than the larger set of four plazas nearby. Terere vendors and shoe polishers set up in the shade, and couples take a break on park benches. Plaza Uruguaya’s proximity to government offices has made it the preferred camping spot for groups who come in from the countryside for protests. It can sometimes be occupied for months at a time by indigenous groups seeking to have their claims be heard. Often these groups have very limited resources and depend on donations to survive while in Asuncion. Entire families can be seen living in makeshift tents made out of plastic tarps, doing laundry, cooking, cleaning, and going about their daily lives. When Plaza Uruguaya is occupied it is still generally safe to walk through during the day, but it should be avoided at night.
