Most city dwellers know that browsing through art galleries is one of the truly enlightening and (best of all) free cultural activities around. For no more than the price of an espresso at a nearby cafe you have to do that, right? you can while away a fine afternoon or early evening.
Boston’s galleries are concentrated into two centers: Newbury Street, of course, and the more recent enclave along South Street, near South Station. By the way, keep an eye out for Art Newbury Street, a Sunday afternoon event happening each spring and fall. The street is closed off to cars, and all the galleries put on their very best. Live music, balloons, face painting for the kiddies, etc.
Some galleries may require you to buzz in, only for security purposes. Don’t fear that you’re being kept out because of an annual income below that of, say, Ross Perot; go on in! After all, the richer people are, the less they have to care about their appearances for all the gallery owners know, someone in tom jeans could be an eccentric millionaire. Be sure to sneer at one or two paintings, as though you could buy one if it were any good.

A small gallery and framing shop in Washington Square, with very impressive exhibits every month by Boston-area artists. Open Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10 to 6 p.m.
