In 1820 the castle had its guns removed and it was partially dismantled; then, in 1880, the building was converted to a coastguard station. In 1944 the owners of the castle, Sir Edward de Stein and his sister, presented it to the National Trust. As well as the castle, the garden and nearby limekilns are also in the care of the National Trust while the priory, which is now just a ruin, is in the care of English Heritage. The whole of the 8,000 acres around Holy Island, stretching from Budle Bay to the south and Goswick Sands to the north, is an important nature reserve. The sand habitats, mudflats, sea marshes and sand dunes give refuge to an extremely rich variety of animal and bird life and twitchers come from far and wide to view the hordes of different birds. So, unfortunately, do the wildfowlers, although they are now strictly controlled by licence. Holy Island and the adjacent mainland is world famous for its waders and overwintering wildfowl and in 1981-1982, it was recognised as the eighth most important site in the whole of the British Isles and Irish estuaries. The most common species of duck is the wigeon, which had over 2,600, at a peak count in the 1980s. Whooper swans, brent geese, greylag geese, mute swans, mallard and teal and even the occasional pintail visit the areas surrounding Holy Island. Very common off the coast are eider duck, common or velvet scoter, four species of grebe, great Northern divers, gannets, puffins and guillemots.
