That’s essentially what I did. To summarise, I first wet my feet at home; then, jaunted to St. Martin; then, further afield to St. Barths; then, travelled within the wider Caribbean; and, finally, I launched out from Barbados to Canada in November 1970.
By such time, Canada had replaced Britain as the place to go to by British Commonwealth citizens in search of a bright, happy and prosperous future. So, afer spending three years on a scholarship to the University of the West Indies campus there, followed by four years teaching, it was time for the grown eagle to spread its wings and soar to new and higher heights.

In the early 1960s, Errol Barrow’s Barbados was a great place in which to study, live, work and experience many wonderful things. There, I shed a lot of the baggage of scales, naivety, shyness, rust and obvious ignorance that I, as a small islander, had travelled with to “Little England” which boasted a high literacy rate.
I became immensely popular at university, being at age 21, possibly the youngest student registered there. I was widely known for my affable nature; willingness to help other students with their assignments; my almost unrivalled table tennis skills and abilities, I being the number two seed who ofen beat the number one; and, for my many shirt wetting, crowd arresting, tireless dancing.
And, so it was that Barbados had refined and prepared me for the bigger world. Thus, it was a much more confident, just turned 28 year old George who landed at the Toronto airport with his 25 year old Barbadian wife of four years and our 2 year old son.
Picture me arriving – wearing a black horse hair winter coat – at the huge airport terminal that was covered with snow and surrounded by an unaccustomed bleakness.
