It didn’t even begin to dawn on me that there was something wrong. Finally I arrived at the chief engineer’s office. He looked at me for several minutes – he seemed to be leering but perhaps it was my imagination. He told me to wait outside. I stood there for 45 minutes. He came out: OK, son: I think you’ve had your long stand. You’ve certainly been standing there long enough, off you go. I stood there for a moment, gawking at him. You’ve been had, laddie. It’s all part of the fun.
