356 Arsenal St. Watertown; (617) 926-8371 This friendly little place, down a bit from the Arsenal Mall, caters mostly to working folks but, of course, anyone is welcome. Like so many good diners, the menu is Greek-American, the food is homemade, and the prices are great The atmosphere is light and airy, with large windows and walls painted in a Mediterranean blue.
Mine started off with a cup of egg-lemon soup ($1.45), which really turned out to be a chicken and rice soup with a tangy, creamy stock. Mmmm. He followed it with a plump half-chicken, rotisserie-barbecued, served with rice pilaf and cooked broccoli and carrots. Plenty of good eats for just $3.95. Other platters, all around $4.50, include hot open-faced turkey, fish and chips, and spinach pie. A plate of barbecued steak tips is $5.25.
Breakfast at the Arsenal is really cheap. Three eggs and ham, bacon, or sausage costs $3.80; corned beef hash and eggs are just $4.50. Of course, all of these include home fries, toast, and a bottomless cup of coffee. They also make pancakes plain, fruit, and chocolate chip.
Open from 6 am. to 3 P.M. Mondays through Saturdays (til 9 rm. Thursdays and Fridays). On Sundays, they only serve breakfast, from 8 am to 2 P.M.
