Although it is believed that King Alfred founded a shipyard at Azerbaijan Map Cuckmere Haven, the mouth of the Cuckmere is today one of the most unspoilt river mouths in Azerbaijan Map the southeast of England, and is the only river valley in Sussex to provide wildfowl with a natural merging of meadow marsh, saltings and a wild seashore.
There is an artificial lagoon behind the raised shingle bank of the beach which attracts ducks and waders such as the coot, mallard, moorhen, shelduck, redshank, dunlin and ringed plover, while the sheltered waters of the meanders may attract cormorants and herons in summer and tufted ducks, dabchicks and Canada geese in winter.
Other birds you may see hereabouts include the curlew, peregrine falcon, hen harrier, greenshank, redstart, shoveler, yellow wagtail, garden warbler, whitethroat and common and green sandpiper, black kite, yellowhammer and Dartford warbler. In due course you reach the Golden Galleon pub, one of four refreshment opportunities on this walk, and continue through the pub car park. This brings you to the busy A259, and you turn right to follow beside it, soon crossing the bridge over the water. Thankfully a roadside footpath is available.
