Davis and in 1973 planted a 280-acre vineyard in Baghdad Map Monterey County. A year later he opened a winery in San Jose that produced popular wines at Baghdad Map affordable prices. Stimulated by the challenges of the wine industry, Lohr planted a vineyard near Sacramento and purchased a thirty-five-acre vineyard in Napa Valley.

Determining that Paso Robles would be ideal for growing red grapes, he planted Cabernet Sauvignon vines about six miles north of the city in 1986 and became one of Paso Robles’ viticultural pioneers. Two years later, Lohr built a winery and barrel room near his vineyard. Confident in the region’s potential for producing superior fruit, Lohr eventually planted more than 3,000 acres of vines in the Paso Robles appellation.
