The Baby Seal Affair
Any mention of seals in the Far North is bound to trigger images from the international campaign waged to protect the lives of harp seal pups. The pictures did their work; everyone remembers the shots of those adorable little balls of fur being clubbed and then falling bloody to the ice. Meanwhile, few people seem to care about the Inuits, who once survived by hunting what is, to be sure, a very photogenic animal.
In 1977, a number of activist groups raised an outcry against the hunting of seal pups, supporting their aiguments with grisly images of baby seals being clubbed to death by hunters. As a result, buying and selling seal fur is no longer allowed. The seal populations have increased dramatically, to the point where in some areas seals face starvation and death. The ecological balance, which has always included Inuit hunters taking their share, has been destroyed. The social and economic consequences for the Inuit, who are now more dependent on government aid than ever, have also been severe. This was surely not the intended aim of the campaign. It would have been smarter to establish more humane ways of hunting seals and to show concern for the people who derived their livelihood from hunting, rather than spend vast amounts on exhibiting grisly images.
