The 29-year-old, 100-ton wooden schooner Lady of the Lake with a crew of five was wrecked on Plough Rock on 3 November 1866. On 17 September 1867, the British schooner Jane and Margaret was carrying coal from Sunderland to Aberdeen when she was totally wrecked, but her crew survived. On 27 March 1869, the British schooner Cresswell was wrecked while transporting coal from Sunderland to Montrose, but the crew were saved along with part of her cargo. The steam tug Courier was carrying coal when she was wrecked during a gale near Holy Island bar and sank shortly afterwards. She was sold for scrap where she lay on 18 October 1875. The Courier (Official No.5305) was an iron-hulled 323-ton paddle cargo steamer completed in 1850 as Yard No.4 by T. Wingate and Co. Glasgow, for Hull and Leith Steam Packet Co.
