The mission and a school closed in 1849 because of unfavorable relations with the employees of the American Fur Company and the Ojibwa residents. Ely eventually left the ministry and went into business in the Duluth-Superior area.
There is an old cemetery about 0.3 miles off the main trail of the 5.0 mile hike. The cemetery is on land that once belonged to Francis Roussain, who worked for a time for the American Fur Company. He offered this site as a replacement when the Lake Superior & Mississippi Railroad forced the villagers to relocate the Fond du Lac cemetery. Today two headstones, three bases, and several sunken plots without markers are all that remain within a wire fence. Francis Roussain and two of his young children are among those buried here.
