History of Fribourg

Fribourg is the capital of the Canton of Fribourg in Switzerland. It has a population of about 55,000 people. The city is located at the confluence of the Saane and Rhone rivers. Fribourg was founded as a Roman town in the 1st century AD by the general Servianus Gallus. It received its charter from the Emperor Charlemagne in 888 AD and became an imperial free city. It prospered from its position as a trade center on one of the major routes between Germany and Italy. In the 12th century, it passed under control of the Habsburgs, and in 1477 it was incorporated into Bern. But Fribourg retained its own administrative structure and parliament up to 1848. In 1874, however, it lost its independence to Bern in a referendum.

Fribourg’s economic base has always been based on textiles and related industries, but today it also has a strong pharmaceutical industry. Major tourist attractions include its medieval old town, several churches, and the ruins of an ancient castle.
