London has a very visible gay scene, ranging from flamboyant to mainstream. Time Out devotes a section to gay listings, and gay newspapers include the Pink Paper. Boyz magazine, free from gay bars, and the Ginger Beer website (www.gingerbeer.co.uk) track gay and lesbian nightlife respectively. Soho especially Old Compton Street is the heart of gay London, with much smaller scenes in Islington, Earl’s Court, and Brixton.

The Box, 32-34 Monmouth St. (7240 5828). Recently renovated, this spacious gay mixed bar-brasserie is popular with a stylish mediafashion crowd. Open M-Sa llam-llpm, Su 7-10:30pm. MCV.

Vespa Lounge, St. Giles Circus ( 7836 8956). Tube: Tottenham Court Rd. Relaxed lesbian lounge bar with comfy seats, pool table. Thai food from downstairs Conservatory restaurant. Gay men welcome as guests. Open M-Sa 6pm-midnight.
