Just off the south side of Staple Island are the scattered remains of the steamer Saint Andre. On 28 October 1908, on her final voyage, the ship stranded on Crumstone in dense fog; she was carrying a crew of sixteen and a cargo of iron ore from Caen to Grangemouth. The vessel stood there for several days before being washed off and drifting across to Staple Island, where she sank against the cliff face. None of the crew was lost. The Saint Andre (Official No.1502) was a steel-hulled 1,121-ton French steam cargo ship measuring 70.10 m in length, with a 9.06-m beam and a 4.19-m draught. Craig, Taylor and Co.
