La Expo Feria (July)
Nicknamed la Expo, this large two week fair features farm animals, business lectures, product showcases, food, games, and more. Popular with all ages, it is a good chance to experience a large county fair with Paraguayan flare (see La Expo) www.expo.org.py Founding of Asuncion (August 15th)
The founding of Asuncion is marked with celebrations throughout the city including fireworks, cultural events in front of the Panteon de los Heroes, a large scale Catholic mass in the cathedral as well as the nautical procession of the Virgen Maria Auxiliadora from Sajonia to downtown Asuncion on the river.
Festival Mundial del Arpa (October/November)
Held in Asuncion’s Municipal Theater, this three-day festival features the best national harpists. It is a great chance to hear world class musicians play both Paraguayan classics and new compositions. International acts showcase other styles and traditions as well. Tickets range from Gs. 15,000 to Gs. 25,000, a real bargain considering this is a small theater and even the nosebleed section has a great view.
Festival Internacional de Cine (September/October – dates vary)
International and national films are given the spotlight with screenings in movie theaters and cultural centers throughout the city. Finalists in national film contests are also given a chance to show their work. www.pla.net.py/cinefest
Muestra de Cine de Asuncion (dates vary)
The Municipality of Asuncion and the Asociacion de Periodistas de Arte y Espectaculos del Paraguay (APEP) organize this series of Latin American film screenings.
