1779 Margaret Cochran Corbin receives the first soldier’s pension ever granted to a woman, as the Continental Congress recognizes her for her bravery and sacrifice during the ongoing Revolutionary War. Lexington-Fayette Map Tourist Attractions As so many other women have done, Margaret accompanied her husband when he enlisted in the Continental army.

During the Battle of Harlem Heights, New York in 1776, after her husband was killed, she assumed his post, firing an artillery piece until she was nearly killed by cannon fire. Receiving severe wounds to her face and upper body, Corbin lost the use of one arm but she will be considered a regular soldier in the Continental army until her discharge in 1783 at the end of the war. Her example of heroism is also symbolic of the gender role filled by women throughout the colonial period. During this period, women undergo extreme difficulties in order to support their husbands’ endeavors and assume many male-role responsibilities (though not all of their rights) when their husbands are removed from the scene.
