Church of San Stefano

  • Duration: 15 minutes (Opening hours are Monday – Saturday 10:00 – 17:00 and Sunday 13:00 – 17:00 Admission €2.50)

Situated on the northern edge of the large Campo di San Stefano. Built mainly in the 13th century, it contains a wide collection of artworks with notable pieces by Tintoretto, Veneziano and Vivarini.

Take Calle de le Boteghe out of the piazza next to the church and continue heading west. When you reach the crossroads with the Algergo San Samuel Hotel, you turn left onto Calle de le Carrozze and follow the road until the Campo San Samuel, the canal and the grandeur of the Palazzo Grazzi.

Palazzo Grazzi

  • Duration: 1 hour (Opening hours 10:00 – 19:00 daily, except Tues. Admission up to €20 with Audioguide, which is worth is for the additional information.)

This stylish palace is located in Campo San Samuele and overlooks the Grand Canal. It has now been converted into a gallery for contemporary arts and has a regularly changing calendar of exhibitions, with many pieces shown from the Franciose Pinault collection, and works by Picasso.

Exit the piazza to the south and walk around the comer until you reach the first junction, take that down and directly cross the small square onto Calle del Frutartiol. This will bring you back into the far end of the Campo di San Stefano where you turn immediately right and onto the bridge and over the Grand Canal.

Ponte dell’Accademia

  • Duration: 15 minutes

One of the four bridges across the Grand Canal, it was first proposed way back in 1488 but it was eventually constructed in 1854, a steel bridge designed by Alfred Neville. This was demolished and replaced in the 1930’s, this in turn was also replaced with the current timber bridge in 1985.

Crossing the bridge you will see the Accademia straight in front of you. Now may be an ideal time for a spot of lunch, there is a lovely restaurant just around the corner from the academia on Calle Nov Pistor.

The Trattoria ai Cugnai is a family run restaurant with excellent reviews and great recommendations to taste the homemade gnocchi or the seafood menu.
