IOTOMAC AND GARRETT STATE FORESTS

These two state forests are administered together and consist of multiple tracts in western Maryland. A portion of Potomac State Forest borders on the Potomac River, and this forest includes 3,220-foot Backbone Mountain.

Along with mountains and rock outcroppings there are rolling hills with streams, some ponds and bogs, and forests of oak and hickory, maple

and cherry, with spruce and white pine. Wildlife includes white-tailed deer, black bear, bobcat, and wild turkey.

Activities: The two forests have a number of trails for hiking and backpacking. Some trails are used for cross-country skiing in winter. Fishing is also possible here. Hunting is permitted in season.

Camping Regulations: Trailside camping is allowed for backpackers. A free permit must be obtained from the forest office. Some designated campsites are also available, and a ranger visits these sites and issues the required permit there.
