Housed in a Spanish Colonial revival building constructed in 1923, The Mills College Art Museum had one of the first collections of contemporary art on the West Coast when it opened, and since the 1920s it has continued a tradition of exhibiting recent art from around the world. Important modernists appeared at Mills in the 1930s including Picasso, Albers. Leger, and Feininger. In recent years, the Museum has held exhibitions by Adolph Gottlieb, Sophie Calle, Jennifer Bartlett, Elizabeth “.lurrav. John Case. Alice Neel, and Albert Virk. The program also includes exhibitions from the permanent collection and shows b\ graduating seniors and MFA students. Mills has the largest permanent collection of any liberal arts college on the West Coast, numbering more than 6,000 objects. It has particular strength in 04d Master and modern American and European prints and drawings (including work by Diirer, Delacroix. Redon, Cassatt. Sloan, Baldessari); Asian textiles; Japanese, ancient American, and modem ceramics; and California regionalist, paintings.
