With the Megstone being so remote, ship’s crews in the 1800s would have stood little chance of being rescued, especially during rough weather. On 26 January 1949, the 616-ton Leith steamer St Abbs Head (1914 – A. F. Henry and MacGregor Ltd, Leith) ran aground but was able to re-float later without suffering too much damage. The Swedman Rocks are 648 metres to the west and inshore of Megstone and 1.57 miles southwest of Bamburgh Castle. On a low spring tide the rocks can easily be seen from Seahouses, which is 3.39 miles away to the southeast, and they dry to half a metre on the lowest astronomical tide; at other times, however, an echo sounder will come in handy. If you haven’t an echo sounder, the next best way to find them is to approach the area from the direction of Megstone when the tide is in full ebb flow and look for where the current is swirling around the three highest points of the reefs, then throw a heavy shot weight with plenty of line on it, attached to a large surface marker buoy, onto the seaward side of the rock. The western (shore) side of Swedman is just a flat stony bottom in depths of around 10-12 metres, which gently slopes away to 17 metres over a distance of 100 metres or so.
