330 Homer St, Newton; (617)552-7145 Across the street from its town hall, Newton has a gorgeous new main library, which includes an art gallery and lecture hall. Speakers usually have a book to plug, but these have included such luminaries as Rep. Barney Frank, Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Maxine Kumin, and animator Janet Perlman, an Oscar nominee, showing and discussing her work. Lectures are free and open to all. The

In addition to these high-brow programs, the library also shows movies on Wednesday evenings at 7. You never know what they’ll show (well, you do if you pick up a schedule), from the Marx Brothers to a documentary on Spike Lee to Zeffirelli’s Romeo and Juliet. They also run a family matinee on the first Saturday of each month. All free.
Other town libraries run free film programs, and many colleges show pop movies in their campus centers, often open to the public for a small fee. Check the ones in your area.
