Taller Puertorriqueno

Taller Puertorriqueno, which translates to Puerto Rican Workshop, was established in 1974 by Latino artists and activists in the North Kensington area of Philadelphia. They created a community-based, graphic-arts workshop to provide cultural training alternatives to local youth. The organization, now nationally recognized as a model organization that uses the arts as a vehicle for social change, has grown to include classrooms, a theater, two galleries, and a bookstore.

We had to call him Chief’; never Chiefy’, never sir’. ‘Sir’ was for officers’, he told us, and all officers were queers, cowards and lazy bastards. He was a Chief Petty Officer’ and it was the CPOs who ran the Navy. Chiefy’s six o’clock muster speech left us all in no doubt that he was running this ship. He stood in front of the fireplace, buttoned up in full uniform, grey and grizzled, built like a barrel, mean-faced, ragged-voiced, each word a stake in the heart. He made sure we knew what an awful time we were going to have and what an utterly worthless shower we were. We would be woken at 05.45 to wash, dress and turn to for our morning cleaning duties. All cadets in Queen Anne Terrace, except the senior cadet, would have morning cleaning duties. There would be an inspection by the senior cadet at 06.
