The third officer went to say something, then changed his mind and walked into the accommodation block, Claire trailing behind. The chief officer turned on us, black eyes boring into me, pinning me down. I sat on the edge of my bunk in my new blues uniform, wondering what to do and where to go. I didn’t want to go on the flying bridge and get flayed alive by the chief mate, but I couldn’t just sit on my bunk. I was hungry. I looked out the door. The third mate and his wife Claire walked by. Come on he said, without breaking step. I followed dutifully. We went to the officers’ bar, which was in the aft accommodation block.
